What makes the Proficient Class different?

1. UNLIMITED CLASS ACCESS

– For students who are ready to take more ownership of their growth –

At Hongik Taekwondo, “Proficient Class” students have three dedicated training sessions each week—Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, and Saturdays from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. These classes are designed for students who have shown strong potential in areas like focus, coordination, and leadership.

In addition to these set times, proficient students are welcome to join any of our regular classes throughout the week, as often as they’d like. This gives them more chances to practice, revisit techniques, and challenge themselves beyond the usual schedule.

We’ve seen that when students are given the freedom to train more, many of them rise to the occasion. They start to take more responsibility for their progress, become more consistent, and even gain confidence by helping younger students in class.

This kind of open access isn’t just about more practice—it’s about helping students take the lead in their own journey.

2. LEADERSHIP AND TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES
– Turning growth into guidance To be Genuine Leader –

At Hongik Taekwondo, One of the most important parts of the Proficient Class is helping students grow not just as martial artists, but as leaders in every fields. As they develop confidence and communication skills, students are given opportunities to lead warm-ups, assist in partner drills, or help guide younger students during regular classes.

These experiences allow them to apply what they’ve learned in real-time—not just repeating techniques, but learning how to explain, demonstrate, and encourage others. It’s one thing to be good at something; it’s another to help someone else get better. That’s where real leadership starts.

By stepping into small teaching roles, students strengthen their own understanding, build empathy, and develop a greater sense of responsibility. They also begin to see themselves as role models, which helps them carry those same leadership values beyond the dojang and into their everyday lives.

3. PRINCIPLE LECTURE INTERGRATION
– Building character alongside skill –

At Hongik Taekwondo, we believe that the true purpose of martial arts extends beyond mastering forms and techniques. It’s about shaping the kind of person a student becomes—focused, respectful, resilient, and kind. That’s why our Proficient Class includes regular principle lectures designed to strengthen not only the body, but also the mind and heart.

These lectures are intentional. Rather than adding more physical drills, we create a space where students can pause, reflect, and think about their role as growing leaders. Each session invites students to consider not just how they train, but how they treat others, how they respond to challenges, and how they carry themselves both in class and in daily life.

Topics often include ideas like staying focused even when distracted, taking responsibility for one’s actions, using respectful words with peers and instructors, managing frustration or disappointment, and recognizing when to support others instead of always standing in the spotlight. These are real-life leadership lessons—practical, age-appropriate, and meaningful to the situations students face regularly.

Over time, we’ve seen how these quiet but thoughtful understanding of how physical practice affect mind becomes just as impactful as the loudest kicks or strongest stances. They reinforce the values that make Taekwondo more than a sport—they make it a way of life. Students begin to see that real strength includes patience, humility, and the courage to grow, not only physical strength.

By including principle lectures as part of the Proficient Class, we help students build a foundation for the kind of leadership that lasts far beyond the dojang—one grounded in character, not just skill.
